Murtala Bindawa Isah

Deputy Director (Research), Affiliate Researcher, PI Infectious disease research group BioRTC

Bio

I am an affiliate researcher at the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC), Yobe State University, and a Senior Lecturer at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina, Nigeria. I am also a Hanjiang International Young Researcher at Shaanxi University of Technology, China (2023–date). My research focus cuts across multidisciplinary areas of infectious diseases and metabolic disorders, with particular emphasis on the development of diagnostic tools, surveillance strategies, and therapeutic interventions.

My work integrates approaches from biochemistry, molecular biology, natural products research, and biomedical data analysis to address major public health challenges, particularly in malaria and other infectious diseases prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. I am especially interested in biomarker discovery, antibody-based diagnostics, and the translation of natural bioactive compounds into potential therapeutic agents.

As part of this work, I am involved in ongoing efforts to establish surveillance for histidine-rich protein (HRP) gene deletions in Plasmodium falciparum in Yobe State, Nigeria. This work aims to monitor the emergence and spread of HRP2/HRP3 deletions that can compromise the effectiveness of HRP2-based rapid diagnostic tests, thereby contributing to improved malaria diagnostic strategies and surveillance systems.

In addition to laboratory-based research, I am actively involved in research training, capacity building, and the development of collaborative research networks. Through my affiliation with BioRTC and international collaborations, I contribute to initiatives aimed at strengthening biomedical research infrastructure and training early-career scientists in Africa. My work has resulted in several peer-reviewed publications and collaborative projects focused on improving disease surveillance and diagnostic capabilities in resource-limited settings.
