Strengthening International Collaboration and Computational Neuroscience Capacity at BioRTC

As two BioRTC researchers, Muhammad Umar and Muhammad Baba Goni, conclude their advanced training visit to Barcelona this weekend, the Director of the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC), Prof. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, also visited Spain on the invitation of Prof. Alberto Compte to deliver a scientific seminar to the neuroscience community at the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS).

The visit provided an important opportunity to review the progress of the researchers, who have been undertaking advanced training in computational neuroscience and related experimental systems through collaborations established between BioRTC, IDIBAPS, and the University of Sussex.

The training focused on strengthening expertise in computational neuroscience, neuronal circuit modelling, and advanced experimental approaches that BioRTC aims to integrate into its growing neuroscience platform in Nigeria.

In addition to the seminar, the visit served as an important platform to further strengthen ongoing collaborations between BioRTC and leading neuroscience groups in Barcelona, including discussions around future training opportunities, research development, and the establishment of sustainable computational and experimental neuroscience capabilities within BioRTC.

This partnership forms part of a broader initiative launched last year through support from the Simons Foundation and the Yobe State Government to develop a computational neuroscience cluster serving Nigeria and the wider West African region.

BioRTC sincerely appreciates Prof. Alberto Compte, Prof. Miguel Maravall, Jordi Soriano, Jaime de la Rocha, and all collaborating teams for their continued support, mentorship, and commitment toward strengthening neuroscience capacity in Africa.
