Building MRI Imaging Capacity for Dementia Research and Clinical Impact: BioRTC Hosts Prof. Udunna Anazodo

Advancing Neuroimaging for Dementia Research

Last week, the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) had the honour of hosting Prof. Udunna Anazodo, a leading neuroimaging expert from McGill University, Canada, for a specialised training in MRI brain imaging as part of BioRTC’s Wellcome Trust-funded Dementia Project.

This high-level training not only enhances the core research objectives of the project, led by Prof. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, but also serves a dual purpose:

  • Building the capacity of radiologists and radiographers at Yobe State University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH)
  • Strengthening clinical imaging practices in the region

Bridging Research and Healthcare

The training was designed to equip local imaging specialists with the tools and knowledge required to collect and interpret high-quality neuroimaging data—crucial for both dementia research and everyday clinical decision-making.

By embedding capacity building into the heart of this research project, BioRTC continues to align scientific advancement with long-term health system strengthening in Yobe State.

Strategic Government Engagement

During the visit, Prof. Udunna and her team met with the Secretary to the Yobe State Government (SSG) to explore broader areas for collaboration—particularly in cardiovascular imaging and other clinical domains where advanced imaging technologies can have transformative impact.

The SSG emphasized that cardiovascular disease remains one of the most pressing health challenges across sub-Saharan Africa and reiterated the State Government’s strong commitment to:

  • Supporting advanced research and clinical training
  • Investing in imaging and diagnostic infrastructure
  • Positioning Yobe as a hub for medical tourism in Nigeria’s Northeast

With facilities like those already available at YSUTH, this vision is rapidly taking shape.

Innovating for Accessibility: Portable MRI Technology

As part of this growing partnership, Prof. Udunna’s team also introduced an innovative project focused on developing portable MRI scanners—a technology that could:

  • Drastically reduce imaging costs
  • Enable community-based screening in underserved areas

Such innovation holds great promise for democratizing access to diagnostic imaging and further advancing the integration of research and healthcare at the community level.

Global Partnerships Driving Local Solutions

This collaboration is a powerful example of how international partnerships can drive local impact—combining scientific excellence, technological innovation, and capacity building to address complex health challenges.

We thank Prof. Udunna Anazodo, her team, and the Yobe State Government for their continued support and shared commitment to strengthening research, diagnostics, and health outcomes in the region.
